German Shepherd Mix

In regard to understanding the German shepherd mix it pays to first of all realize that every German shepherd is in fact derived from three distinct types of shepherd dogs that in turn originated in Germany, which of course is how this dog breed gets his name. Of course, not everyone can own a purebred German shepherd which is a pity because the purebreds make excellent guard and watch as well as guide dogs. What’s more, German shepherd or Alsatian as he is also known as is known for his ability to learn and he is also very well suited for training to do various kinds of activities.

Cross Breeding Began In Earnest

The plain truth about even the pure German shepherd is that he has been derived from the German shepherd mix breed – even from the time when he took his first steps on this planet. It is therefore worth learning a bit more about these three different breeds from which the German shepherd has been derived. In fact, the three distinct mixes were obtained from various parts of Germany and the real cross breeding began sometime in the nineteenth century when long haired shepherd dogs were mixed with shorthaired and even wire-haired shepherds.

The good news for anyone that is planning on keeping a German Shepherd mix is that they possess excellent temperaments and they are of course ideally suited for doing guard duty as well as for guiding people. It is little wonder then that the German Shepherd mix is so widely used in police work and they are also extensively used by the army who use him to do search and rescue operations.

It took till the turn of the nineteenth century for the German shepherd mix to be really refined as a dog breed and only in the early part of the following century was he finally recognized by the American Kennel Club. However, there have been further mutations of the German shepherd mix that have led to hybrid crossbred German shepherd mix. These kinds of hybrids have been given official recognition by the American Canine Hybrid Club and the name for the cross bred hybrids was Shepadoodle which is a dog breed derived from crossing the German shepherd with the Standard Poodle.

These designer breeds are derived through crossing different dog breeds across generations and so they possess characteristics derived from more than just a pair of breeds and this has led to fewer numbers of purebred German Shepherds.

The Alsatian is a common type of German shepherd and this breed in particular is very obedient and also loyal and so makes an excellent working dog. He is really quick to pick up things and is known for his outstanding intelligence that along with his ability to train well makes him a formidable ally for his owner.

German shepherd mixes, just like any other kind of crossbreed, can be freed from their genetic diseases. The most common of these diseases are hip dysplasia that commonly affects almost every German shepherd mix and it can be rid by proper crossing with other breeds. The only exception is when both parents share a common genetic disease when the chances of the disease being passed on to the next generation are greater. In any case, there no denies the fact that the German shepherd mix, like other mix breeds, will live to be a healthy dog that often even outlives the purebred versions.

The Great Dane is often used to create more attractive German shepherd mixes and for good reason. Both the German shepherd as too the Great Dane possess compatible qualities including being affectionate and also being hyperactive. Furthermore, they are also both very cute and though size differences have to be overlooked they do have enough in common to be interbred.

There are of course numerous instances of the German shepherd mix picking up the worst of characteristics from their parents. Typically, this happens when the German shepherd is crossed with the Chow Chow and with Akitas as too Rottweiler and also the Doberman pinscher. All these breeds are known to be excellent guard dogs and when bred with the German shepherd can lead to the German shepherd mix becoming overly aggressive and also very dominant.

However, a German shepherd mix that is derived by crossing the German shepherd with the Labrador retriever or Golden Retriever or even with a Collie tends not to have bad characteristics and will be milder in their manner and so less of a problem to their owners. The worst instance of the German Shepherd mix is when the German Shepherd is crossed with the Alaskan Malamute because the latter has a lot of aggression in them and they are also very independent and stubborn which characteristics are not wanted in a German Shepherd mix.
